ABOUT THE SONOMA MENDOCINO COAST

LOCATION: Approximately 100 miles North of the San Francisco Bay Area, beyond Sonoma County's Russian River yet South of Mendocino County's Navarro River.

DIRECTIONS: Traveling to The Sonoma Mendocino Coast is an adventure! Plan to enjoy the journey as well as your destination. If at all possible, travel during daylight hours to experience the spectacular scenery. Allow additional time for frequent stops to explore the many points of interest along the way. Drive courteously and defensively; expect the unexpected around each blind curve. And no, "the map is not the territory"; there really are no "shortcuts"! Traveling south: Time permitting, a leisurely drive along Highway 1 from the Golden Gate Bridge can be a memorable day trip. A more direct inland route takes you north along Highway 101, then west along the Russian River out to the coast at Jenner, then north again to the Gualala River and the county line dividing The Sonoma Mendocino Coast. Traveling north: Whether visiting from the Pacific Northwest, the historic coastal villages of Fort Bragg, Noyo Harbor, and Mendocino, or the neighboring wine region of Anderson Valley, you will find The Sonoma Mendocino Coast on Highway 1, just south of the Navarro River and the hamlet of Elk.

AMENITIES: Blissful peace and quiet. Incredible natural beauty. A small town friendliness. Cultivated urbane tastes. The best of both worlds!

GOODS & SERVICES: Taking care of business along the coast is an enjoyable experience. The pace is relaxed. Emphasis is on friendly, personal service. You can easily find most everything you need (including Haagen-Dazs!) and very little of what you don't. Basic goods and services are readily available within the communities of Elk, Manchester, Point Arena, and Gualala; there you will find Banking, ATMs, Postal & Fed Ex Services, Fuel/Automotive Mechanics/AAA Towing, Medical / Fire & Rescue / Law Enforcement, Galleries, Boutiques, and Dining - both informal and gourmet.

RECREATION & ENTERTAINMENT: Hiking, biking, fishing, boating, surfing, golf, tennis, swimming, whale watching and star gazing. Take time out from your routine . . . begin that book you've been meaning to read; catch up on neglected correspondence; rediscover the art of conversation. Create space for inspiration and rejuvenation. Take in a concert. Tour one of the many galleries. Appreciate local theater, arts & crafts. Visit harbors, museums and lighthouses; plan a day-trip tour of micro-breweries and wineries .

COMMUNITY: Home to retirees, telecommuters and seasonal vacationers alike. . . united by their appreciation of the temperate marine climate, and a need to experience the inspiring beauty of the sea. In contrast to the solitary and isolated beauty of the land and sea, there exists a remarkable sense of community. Discover for yourself what earlier settlers intimately knew . . . if something needs doing, look to yourself first, then enlist family, friends, and neighbors for some good ideas, a little hard work, and a great time for all. What was true at the turn of the last century is also true today . . . attending to the business of life and socializing are best when done together.
